How Much Liability Insurance Is Enough?
Liability Insurance
Liability insurance protects you from claims brought by others against you. Generally, you should have enough liability insurance to protect your assets in the event that you injure someone and are sued. Liability insurance does not protect you, your family, your property or your automobile if you are injured as a result of someone else’s negligence.
Insurance for you and your family
In Florida, you are required to purchase personal injury protection (PIP) coverage on your automobile insurance policy. PIP coverage pays your medical expenses and lost wages if you are injured in an accident, regardless of who was at fault for the accident.
In addition to PIP, there are many optional forms of automobile insurance that you can purchase to protect you, your family and your vehicle, including: uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage (UM), medical payments coverage, collision and comprehensive, towing and rental coverage.
“Full coverage” is a myth
Many unscrupulous insurance agents sell policies with the minimum required coverage while telling their customers that they have purchased “full coverage”. Policies with only the minimum coverages required by law can leave you with uncompensated losses if you or a family member is injured in an accident. Optional coverages are especially important in Florida because our state has fewer mandatory insurance requirements and more uninsured drivers than almost any other state.
It is theoretically impossible to be fully covered with regard to liability coverage. Even if you have one million dollars of liability coverage, your coverage will be inadequate if you cause an accident that results in an injury that is worth more than one million dollars.
